Hidalgo County Commissioners' Court/Drainage District Board of Directors met in session on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 and considered agendas that included the following highlights:
COURT PROCLAIMS OCTOBER 25, 2012 AS "SOUTH TEXAS JUVENILE DIABETES ASSOCIATION DAY"
The court proclaimed October 25, 2012 as South Texas Juvenile Diabetes Association Day in Hidalgo County. Sofia Mollick and Hannah Salinas, both of whom suffer from diabetes, addressed Commissioner's Court about their daily struggle with the disease and how it has affected their lives from a young age. The girls encouraged members of the court to learn more about diabetes and how it affects not only adults, but children as well. Debra Franco, President of the South Texas Juvenile Diabetes Association (STJDA), also spoke to the court about the importance of educating the community on diabetes. Franco's son was diagnosed with diabetes at an early age and she started STJDA as a way to encourages other young children and teens with the disease, as well as their parents, to become advocates and help educate the community about diabetes. Several children and parents who are members of STJDA were also present to receive the proclamation.
OPERATION LONE STAR 2012 PARTNERS RECOGNIZED
Commissioners’ Court joined Health and Human Services Chief Administrative Officer Eddie Olivarez in recognizing La Joya Independent School District, South Texas College, RGV Careers an Institute for Higher Learning, the University of Texas-Pan American, and the Valley Grande Institute for their dedication and assistance during Operation Lone Star 2012. Operation Lone Star is a state, military and local joint effort that offers free medical services, during a one-week period, to South Texas residents and provides emergency preparedness training to state and military personnel. This year marked a record turn out for Operation Lone Star in Hidalgo County as more than 3,000 individuals were provided medical services and check-ups, free-of-charge.
EARLY VOTING BEGINS
Elections Administrator Yvonne Ramon reminded the court that Early Voting had begun on October 22nd and would be available through November 2, 2012. Election Day is Tuesday, November 6, 2012. Mrs. Ramon announced that voter turn-out was up over 3,700 from the same day early voting began in 2008, during the Last Presidential Election. She encouraged all registered voters to take advantage of and vote at the mobile unit location nearest them. The mobile unit will be set up at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance and the Old Administration Building today, October 23rd and tomorrow, October 24th, it will be available at South Texas College Mid Valley Campus and Knapp Medical Center.
