Hidalgo County Commissioners' Court/Drainage District Board of Directors met in session on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 and considered agendas that included the following highlights:

COURT RECOGNIZES VALLEY WEST 4-H CLUB MEMBER CHARLES LEE

2012 4H Club Member

The court recognized the recent accomplishment of Charles Lee for his participation in the American Quarter Horse Youth Association Show held in Oklahoma City in August. This year's theme was "Find Your Inner Rockstar" and that is exactly what Charles did. He competed in the Public Speaking contest and earned the title of World Champion. Charles stood in front of the court and performed his energetic speech which described the cultural influences of Mexican culture here in the Valley and how it feels to be a performer. Charles competed against children and teens ages 8-18. He is the youngest member to ever win the event.  

COURT APPROVES RESOLUTION HONORING DAVID CHAVANA 

David Chavana recognized

Commissioners’ Court approved a resolution honoring David Chanava, resident of Edinburg, for his contributions to the City of Edinburg and the All-America City Edinburg 10K Run/Walk. For the past 30 years David Chavana's passion in life has been running. He began the exercise as a way to get healthy and lose weight, however it quickly turned into something much more. Mr. Chavana has competed in over 408 races and ran thousands of miles in events held throughout the United States. One of his greatest accomplishments is being the Director and Co-Founder of the Annual Edinburg All-America City 10K Run/Walk. The court recognized Mr. Chavana for his tireless dedication to Hidalgo County and its citizens. Mr. Chavana stated that he hopes when others look back on his life they can say, "David Chavana had passion." Chavana was joined by his family members, Aunt Lydia Chavana, Cousin Homero Vasquez, Niece Clarissa Palacios, and son Noah and Grandson Trey. Also in attendance were members of the Edinburg 10k Board, as well as former Board Member and 92nd District Judge Ricardo Rodriguez, who spoke highly of Chavana’s commitment and dedication. Precinct 4 Commissioner Joseph Palacios chimed in, noting appreciation for his former Coach and thanking him for his lifetime of service. 


UPDATE ON 2010 CENSUS COUNT QUESTION RESOLUTION PROGRAM

Attorneys Rolando Rios and Jose Garza went before the court to give an update on the recount for the 2010 Census. They are currently in stage 5 of the recount process. According to their figures and the analysis that the County’s GIS team has done, Hidalgo County makes a valid case for a population adjustment.  The team is submitting their data to the Census Bureau, who will re-evaluate the numbers collected during the 2010 census and likely adjust the population count accordingly.


PRECINCT 1 CONSTABLE APPOINTS DEPUTIES

Commissioners' Court approved the appointment of Julio A. Gonzalez and Raul Lozano, Jr., as Deputy Constables by Precinct 1 Constable Celestino Avila. 

EARLY VOTING BEGINS NEXT WEEK

Early voting for the 2012 General Election kicks off next Monday October 22 and ends on November 2. Election Day is November 6, 2012. The elections department will have a mobile unit set up outside Edinburg City Hall during next weeks Commissioners' Court meeting. They encourage everyone to get out and vote!

Hidalgo County Commissioners' Court/Drainage District Board of Directors met in session on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 and considered agendas that included the following highlights:

In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, Commissioners' Court approved a resolution in honor of Dr. Hector P. Garcia, who dedicated his life to the aid and improvement of the quality of life for Mexican-Americans. Garcia, a physician, war hero, and civil rights advocate, fought to bring attention to the Mexican-American civil rights movement through the American G. I. Forum, empowering Mexican Americans to fight numerous legal and political battles. Garcia, who died in 1996, was remembered for his national prominence as a civil rights leader, but also as a medical doctor with a kind heart who treated many patients for free. In attendance to receive the resolution were his daughter, Cecilia Garcia Akers, and her husband Jim Akers.

OCTOBER 2012 PROCLAIMED "BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH"

Sporting pink shirts and ties, the members of Commissioners' Court approved a proclamation declaring October 2012 as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in Hidalgo County. Representatives from Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Cancer Center were present to bring awareness to this critical issue. The proclamation encouraged residents of Hidalgo County to participate in related activities and initiatives to help raise support and awareness of this serious health concern and contribute to the global fight against breast cancer.

LAST DAY TO REGISTER TO VOTE

The Hidalgo County Elections Department reminded Commissioners' Court and the public that the last day to register to vote is today, Tuesday, October 9, 2012. Early voting for the 2012 General Election begins October 22 and ends on November 2. Election Day is November 6, 2012.

Commissioners' Court approved the appointment of Romeo Pena, Jr., as Deputy Constable by Precinct 4 Constable J. E. "Eddie" Guerra.
