Hidalgo County Commissioners' Court/Drainage District Board of Directors met in session on Tuesday, October 09, 2012 and considered agendas that included the following highlights:
COURT HONORS DR. HECTOR P. GARCIA
In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, Commissioners' Court approved a resolution in honor of Dr. Hector P. Garcia, who dedicated his life to the aid and improvement of the quality of life for Mexican-Americans. Garcia, a physician, war hero, and civil rights advocate, fought to bring attention to the Mexican-American civil rights movement through the American G. I. Forum, empowering Mexican Americans to fight numerous legal and political battles. Garcia, who died in 1996, was remembered for his national prominence as a civil rights leader, but also as a medical doctor with a kind heart who treated many patients for free. In attendance to receive the resolution were his daughter, Cecilia Garcia Akers, and her husband Jim Akers.
OCTOBER 2012 PROCLAIMED "BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH"
Sporting pink shirts and ties, the members of Commissioners' Court approved a proclamation declaring October 2012 as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in Hidalgo County.
