Hidalgo County Commissioners' Court met in session on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 and considered an agenda that included the following highlights:

STATUS UPDATE ON CITRUS GREENING

Citrus Canker on Oranges.jpg

Commissioners' Court received a status update on the devastating Citrus Greening Disease by Bret Erickson, a member of Texas Citrus Mutual; a non-profit trade association that represents the interests of the Texas citrus growers and Texas Agri-Life Extension Services Director Barbara Storz. Citrus Greening was confirmed in early February 2012 when it was discovered in a commercial grove in San Juan, it has been contained to that single location as of today. According to USDA, Citrus Greening is spread by a disease-infected insect, the Asian citrus psyllid, and has put the future of America’s citrus at risk. Infected trees produce fruits that are green, misshapen and bitter, unsuitable for sale as fresh fruit or for juice; most infected trees die within a few years. While Hidalgo County Texas Agri-Life Extension Services is still working with numerous local, state, and federal organizations in combating the disease, they will be receiving a USDA Grant through the assistance of Texas Citrus Mutual, for the purpose of promoting  awareness of Citrus Greening Disease through public outreach and education.
