On Thursday, February 21rd, students from Ybarra Elementary in Weslaco ISD joined Hidalgo County Precinct 1 staff in this years tree planting ceremony. The event sponsored by Commissioner AC Cuellar took place at Sunrise Park in Mercedes, TX. The event was held in honor of Arbor Day, where trees are planted to create awareness for the need to plant more trees in our communities. Students were given a presentation by members of the National Forest Service with Texas A&M over both the natural, and economic benefits of planting trees. Following the ceremony, students took to the shovels, and staff from Precinct 1 joined in shoveling dirt to plant two trees. The trees were planted strategically to provide shade to the softball fields for children. After the tree planting, the students were treated to cake and soft drinks donated by HEB and Quick Pic Convenience Store from Weslaco. Students expressed excitement of this event, and hope to bring this project to their respective school.
